Student Council Election

Date of activity: August 15, 2016

Every year, we always have an election to choose for the president of the student council in my school. As a CAS activity, we were allowed to help with the whole process of the election. We helped create the ballots to put the votes in, cutting the paper to vote and other props required. The process took plenty of hours wherein each class is called one by one to the hall to vote.
cutting the vote paper
The preparation was taken place on August 11, 2016
making a cubicle for the students to vote privately

During the election itself, we were dividing the tasks. There are some who were stationed they  in the voting station, directing station, giving the voting paper and last is the evidence that they have voted wherein they need to have an ink in their finger. A for my role, I was stationed at the end of the section wherein students should deep their finger with an ink to complete the election and stated that have voted.

I learnt here that we should collaborate with our friends to produce an effective work environment and be able to complete the work efficiently.

Learning outcomes completed:

(1) Increased their awareness of their own strengths and areas for growth
As, this program were conducted and i was stationed at the end process of election where students should have prove that they have voted, it was challenging task to do. Some students didn't like their finger to be deep into the ink resulting them to run away. In this part, I need to work collaboratively and be firm enough to be able to tell them that  they need to follow the procedure. At the end, I felt that I was able to instruct them well and did a great job in avoiding them to run away.

(3) Planned and initiated activities
I helped in the planning and initiating of the activities in this student council election. Wherein, the placement of the election will be held and where to go to the section first.

(4) Worked collaboratively with others
As a group, we worked together and help each other to produce the most effective work environment to speed up the election.

(5) Shown perseverance and commitment in their activities
Each of us had our own posts that we were responsible to keep in order.

Eye-opening Visit to Yayasan Kasih Anak Kanker Indonesia

Date of Activity: November 18, 2016

The plan to visit the foundation Indonesia's cancer patient's had for long been waiting for its turn to be implemented. Today was when it finally took effect. We arrived there safely as well as for the supplies that we have bought for them. The staff were amicable and expressed their gratitude towards us.

Dividing the task
All the children will get this souvenir (a small token)
Before we went to the foundation, we prepared a small token from us. We made them a necklace serve as hope for them to hold. Inside the necklace they will write their wishes. We divided our task to pack the materials needed such as the necklace and frame that they are going to make.

We help in making the frame
Our program started from introducing ourselves and we continue it by conducting some arts and craft where the children needs to decorate some necklace and frame that we have provided the materials. However, not everyone participated in our program because some of them were taking a nap during our visits. The children seemed to enjoy having visitors there, although some of them looked otherwise.

Making frame (This boy has a big dream to become
an engineer) His frame has the most artistic one
At first, i was struggling to communicate with them, because I am usually not very social. In this activity I tried to initiate some questions and making sure that I can entertain them. After trying, I get along with them. They tell stories and share their dreams. We all get to know each other when we are doing the arts and crafts.
We gave the necklace to each and everyone and asked them to write their wishes so that they won't lose hope

Play games

As soon as we are done with the arts and crafts. We did a little game as well as singing. Most of the children loves to sing so one of us play the guitar and let them sing.

Our visits allows me to realize how we need to value our health and our life. It also makes me realize we should be thankful of what we have. We shouldn't give up easily and lose hope. We should have faith in God and dream high just like the children in this home. These children gave us hope and fight every obstacles that we encountered in life.

Learning outcomes:

  • Increased your awareness of your own strengths and areas for growth
  • Undertaken new challenges
  • Planned and initiated activities
  • Worked collaboratively with others
  • Shown perseverance and commitment in your activities
  • Developed new skills

Foster Homes for the Elderly
at Panti Werdha Wisma Mulia

25th March 2017- We still have some money left from the previous fundraising activities and thus used it to buy some basic needs such as oils, tissue, diapers, detergent and many more for the elderly who were in foster care. Moreover, we gave a small token of our appreciation in a form of snacks.
There were grannies and grandpas whose kids can no longer support them and thus left them there. However, not all of them have the same reason why they are in the foster care. It was nice to see that they enjoy singing and making poem. As we visited there, we do a lot of singing with the elders as well as playing games that can cheer them up. Every one of us from our class talked to all of the elders, get to know them better. We were more than happy to talk to them and listen to their stories.

We conducted the program for 2 hours. We did the singing, playing and cleaning. We all gathered in the hall. During the game, not everyone played the game. Therefore, some of the grandmas and grandpas are sitting watching those who played. We accompany the elders and listen to their stories. While they are playing, we bought some fruits for all the grandmas and grandpas. It was a nice feeling to be with the elder and we get to understand their feeling. They seemed to be happy with our visits, although some of the looked otherwise.

As we talked to them, it was such a surprised knowing some of them had stayed longer than we thought. Also, we found out that most of them are Christian, so we prayed for them. This visit allows me to realize how much we should value them and we should in return pay an attribute of their kindness by taking care of them just like they have taken care of us as soon as we were born. We should be putting our parents first before ourselves. Therefore, they shouldn't be in the nursery home. That way, they will be happy.

Learning outcomes:
1. Increased their awareness of their own strengths and areas for growth
I am usually not very social because I feel awkward to get to know the others. However, conversing with the elderly, I feel very comfortable. It is a different feeling that i got as soon as i started a conversation with them. From their stories that they told makes it so nice to listen to, and make me feel less awkward as i did not have to say much to entertain them. I do realize that I need to be brave enough to socialize with anyone.

2.Undertaken new challenges
I've never been to a foster home before, so this was a pretty exciting experience. I  got the chance to know the world better and aware of those people out there who are not as lucky as us. I do get along with adults and elders quite well, so talking to the elderly wasn't much of a problem for me even though at first making the first move to talk first is hard.

3. Shown perseverance and commitment in their activities
We stayed in the foster home for around 2 hours. It was really fun talking to them and listening to their stories, thus the commitment was genuine, and we personally considered it more as curiosity about what this old lady's life is about.

4. Engaged with issues of global importance

It is sad to know that old people are easily forgotten. Once you can't give much to the society, people tend to forget you especially for the elders. The senior citizens I met and talked to were very sad because they cannot do much with their lives, and they were forced to enjoy this new 'home' of theirs, where the atmosphere were not pleasing to our nose. Some of them were complaining because they cannot bear the smell.

5. Considered the ethical implications of their actions
Old people have a different way of thinking than us students, and sometimes talk about death rather morbidly. Knowing that they are very fragile beings, we made sure that we were polite and cheerful about the things that they worry about. We shouldn’t talk something that might offended them.

6. Developed new skills

I'm not good at talking to people, but I never knew that I feel comfortable and easily cope up with what they are sharing. I learn to be able to socialize more and don’t be afraid to talk to them. This was the first time going to a foster home for the elderly, and I knew I left a mark already.

Graduation Day

Every year we celebrate graduation day for Kindergarten 2, 6, 9 and 12 Graders. For this year it was celebrated on June 8, 2016. It was held 3 times; first batch, 9 until 11 o’clock in the morning for the graduation of Kindergarten 2, second batch, 1 until 3 o’clock in the afternoon for the graduation of grade 6. Third batch, 5 until 7 in the evening for the graduation of grade 9 and 12.

One week after our exams, we students help the teachers making props for the decoration of the hall and some souvenirs for the upcoming graduation day in 1-week times.  Not everyone come to school and help the teachers with the decorations because they have their early vacation.

Before the actual day of graduation, I volunteer to be usherette from 8 in the morning that I should already be in school to prepare everything for the first batch until 8 in the evening.  Aside from being the usherette, we also help the teachers to stick the name of the parents’ graduate’s name. At the end of the graduation, we need to remove the name of the parents that stick on the back of the chair and stick the next graduates’ parents’ name.

During the actual day, we are all stay at the side of the sits in case they need help or something. Usherettes and we ushers mainly assist their sits, giving the booklet that contains the pictures of the graduates and also helping in collecting the candles of the graduates after they light it up.

To be one of the usherettes is a pleasure because it is a challenge for us to be confident and brave in asking the parents, their child’s name. It was a very tiring day and yet we enjoy serving the parents.

So far, we did a great job because we help each other and collaborate with one another. We could not do it without our teachers help who taught us how we should serve the parents and lead us how to be a good ushers and usherettes. In this activity, we are train to build our confidence and our skills to communicate with the elders in good manners. I believe, if we keep up the good work, we are ready to face the reality in the future. For now, we are train for the future so that we can become a good communicator, a risk taker and an open-minded person.

Chinese New Year: Get Rich Booth

We all Chinese people celebrated Chinese New Year every year. In many countries, Chinese New Year is considered a major holiday for the Chinese and has had influence on the lunar New Year celebrations of its geographic neighbors. While us in Indonesia specifically in Jakarta we celebrated on February 5th 2016 in Bina Tunas Bangsa School. We will never forget the tradition of a lion dance.

Three days before our Chinese New Year celebration in school, we prepare the game booth to be played on February 5th 2016. We divided our tasks. Some were painting the Styrofoam, filling bottles with water and preparing the counter booth to claim their gifts. The purpose of this booth is for charity donations, the idea of raising funds.

We have 5 different games which are: dart, throwing cards, bowling, throwing balls to the basket and blow the bubble. For those who play will pay 5 thousand rupiah for each game. They were not only students who play but also teachers. They are donating to the charity by playing and paying for the games.

So far, we earned 1.2 million rupiah in 2 and a half hour. We all enjoyed what we are playing as well as we the grade 11 students were happy serving them and it was a pleasure. The students and even the teachers are showing enthusiasms.

The main objectives that we would like to achieve are:

 (1)  To serve the students patiently, and manage to get a good impressions.

 (2)  To develop efficient work methods.

 (3)  To help in putting efforts towards productivity improvement.

 (4)  To help in learning how to eliminate of the wasteful efforts and useless material handling.

 (5)  Improving the interactions with customers (clear communication skills)

Learning outcomes:

  • Increased awareness of our own strengths and areas for growth
  • Undertaken new challenges
  • Planned and initiated activities
  • Worked collaboratively with others
  • Shown perseverance and commitment in the activities
  • Developed new skills

The activity was a successful because it went according to our plan. We never thought that the game booth will run so successfully. Aside from operating the game booth, the students from every class were involved in performing something that is related to Chinese New Year. Five from our class members performs a modern Chinese dance and I am one of them. It was a fun and memorable activity. Afterwards we celebrated our Chinese New Year by having a class party and along with some games.

This activity make me so exhausted yet it was very fun and interesting to do whereas this activity has taught me a lot of things such as interacting with student in the lower grade and serving them in order to make this activity a successful one. I hope that we can do this activity again in the future.

The second official publication of BTB School

Our school, Bina Tunas Bangsa, happened to make the second school year center folded news letter containing all the events that happened during our second term. Pictures are one of our best memories that can remind us of the past and cherish those moments. This year of 2016, I was chosen to be one of the student council in division of arts. I am in charge of any events especially in designing something. One of my friend and I are chosen to be the layout artist for the spotlight, school year news letter. We divided our tasks. I got to do the cover page and the back page. This task is being conducted by Mr. Edison. He is the one who is guiding us what to do.

On January 13th 2015, I got an email from Mr. Edison on the things that I need to do. I got 8 days to finish the news letter because by Friday, our news letter should be submitted to the head. For any corrections I got 2 days to make it up. I made the correction in just 1 day however it took me 3 times in repeating for the same mistake I’ve made. It is a simple mistake yet it can affect everything.

The main objectives that we would like to achieve are:

(1)   To let the students get the opportunity to show the world their talents are

(2)   Appreciate the important role of teachers on the journey of their learning

(3)  To let the students experience what is it like to work with someone and be cooperative

Learning outcomes:

  • Increased your awareness of your own strengths and areas for growth
  • Undertaken new challenges
  • Planned and initiated activities
  • Worked collaboratively with others
  • Shown perseverance and commitment in your activities
  • Developed new skills

It’s a pleasure to help the schools with the news letter making. I got the offer for the second time. It is a great opportunity to take because I am being trained to work with people with the higher position. It was a challenged task to do because I am dealing with the time. I’ve got a very short time to get everything’s done. We cannot stop the time and it will keep on ticking. I cannot waste another minute. I was after with the time in order to meet up with all the things to be submitted on time. Until then I am able to make it all up. The news letter was due on time despite my busy schedule and numerous workloads from my classes.

The spotlight was a successful because it was accepted and the heads were satisfied with the real outcome. Gladly, the spotlight outcome satisfied everyone and most especially to the eyes of teachers and the head. It was published on February 4, 2016. It was worth giving after all those hectic days I have. It’s not just that, because at the end of the day I received a gift showing his gratitude and appreciation of my hardship. I am thankful that they appreciated my work; moreover, my friend and my work were being pinned in the notice board where everyone and even guests can easily notice it.

This task has taught me a lot of things. Since I’ve done it before I have nothing to worry and concern with the challenges I will face. The difficulty I might face won’t be as stressing as like the first one because I find it more interesting to learn new things and accept new challenges. I seemed to enjoy my work because I tried to learn to take all the things easy and not bring it to stress. By then, I can feel that I’m getting the meaning of working collaboratively, being open-minded and responsive.

Christmas is fast approaching. Our school is organizing a Christmas event together with the disabled children. As we continue our yearly practice of the true meaning of Christmas, “LOVE OF SHARING”, we students like to share our blessings.

Gifts and Donation to the disabled children
On November 27, 2015 we, the grade 11 and 12 collaborated and started announcing and students were given a letter to be informed about bringing unwanted things that can still be used to be donated to the foundation of “Lembaga Daya Dharma Keuskupan Agung” which helps two hundred physically impaired and their families. This donation event really runs well which we could not do it without the help of our CAS teacher, Mrs. Sheryl.

 (1)  To develop efficient work methods

 (2)  To avoid shutting it off our humanity of helping those in need
 (3)  To inspire those who feel useless because of their disabilities

 (4)  strengthen the links between the affordable one with those in need

 (5)  Promote a positive image of those who have disability

Learning outcomes:

  • Increased your awareness of your own strengths and areas for growth
  • Undertaken new challenges
  • Planned and initiated activities
  • Worked collaboratively with others
  • Shown perseverance and commitment in your activities
  • Developed new skills

Preparing the Christmas celebration sure needs a lot of efforts because we need to organize from the games to the performance. We need to involve all the students to participate in these activities. Also making the event we really do need our teachers help. We couldn’t done it without our teachers who always been there when we need them. We divided our task. Grade 11 and 12 are in charge in the game division and the donation.

3 days before Christmas Celebration, we work together hand in hand and divided each tasks. We divided our tasks with our friends in wrapping the gifts for the disabled children, categorizing things (tea with tea, sugar with sugar etc), categorizing the unwanted clothes according to their gender and age and put it into specified box, putting different kind of goods in a plastic for 200 people and the last but not the least is preparing the things for the games.

Everything went according to our plan. We couldn’t have done it without an effective collaboration, and a pure heart of the willingness to help those people out there who are in need. I was very proud of the students in my school who donated a lot from shelters to clothing. Everyone worked collaboratively and took accountability in their roles. I hope through this service we had actually helped to ease their economic problems and pushing the children to have a greater dreams as well as pursuing them. Never stop hoping and believing. Have faith in it.

The event was so exhausting but fun. It was a whole new stressing joyful experience. I have learnt to have more faith in me and never stop believing in yourself no matter what happens even though people keep on pulling you down, fight for it. If disabled children can do an incredible thing such as talents to play music instruments, we should be better than them because we have everything we need.
